Bio

Mahtab Hanna is a British jewellery artist with a Persian background who demonstrates true artistry in marrying the art of jewellery with the quasi-science of politics. Her PhD thesis, "Silent Protest: Political Jewellery", explores jewellery as a medium to engage in political debate. Her research defines political jewellery as the journey of making a covert and overt statement of political views using body adornments and art jewellery. As a form, it has a multi-faceted capacity to possess messaging that could address social and political issues.
Mahtab's practice steers jewellery away from an object of adornment and reveals how it can hold a powerful, unifying language. Jewellery takes on a new role that removes it from the monopolistic domain of expressing wealth, beauty or design. Its unique power is in its communicative and expressive potential.
